1. AD LAYOUTS AND FORMATS

The Colors Of The Rainbow

If you want the biggest revenue impact for the smallest effort, we recommend optimizing the colors used in your ad units. It can increase your revenue up to 4x and choosing the right palettes can mean the difference between ads your users will notice — and click — and ads they’ll skip right over. So, don’t just use the default color palettes and don’t be afraid to experiment with the colors.

Ads Without Borders

Try removing the borders on the ad units by using the same color as the color of the ad unit background. This type of change alone has proven to increase publishers’ revenue by more than 50% and it will provide a more consistent user experience throughout your site. Even with well-blended ads on your site, the ‘Ads by Google’ label keeps the ads distinguishable from your content to ensure that your users aren’t confused.
Still, sometimes using borders might work better for you. In this case, don’t forget that you can choose between square, slightly rounded, or very rounded corners to make sure the ad layout fits into your site’s look and feel.

Wider Is Better

Use a wide skyscraper (160×600) instead of a regular skyscraper (120×600) and try using rectangles as much as you can. For example the medium rectangle (300×250) is our best performing ad format.
The success of the wider ad units is likely due to a few reasons:
- Advertisers placement targeting your site are often interested in branding and visibility, therefore they opt for larger, more visible ad formats, supporting rich media (flash, video and gadget) as well as image ads.
- Changing to wider sizes increases competition among ads to appear in the unit, which traditionally results in higher CPMs.
- The wider formats allow for more horizontal text, which is easier for users to read and therefore more likely to be noticed and clicked on.

Images Speak Louder Than Words

If you chose to show only text ads, you might be loosing revenue. Opt into image ads by changing your ad units. By choosing to display image ads in addition to text ads, you’ll gain access to a whole new set of advertisers and campaigns. Make sure your Ad Type Preference, under the My Account tab, is set to ‘Display text and image ads in all ad units.’
If you chose not to show image ads because you have direct advertisers with image or rich media campaigns you can take advantage of our filtering features to prevent their ads from appearing in your AdSense units.

However, don’t forget that filtering too many sites will decrease the number of ads that can appear on your pages, thereby decreasing your potential AdSense earnings. Keep your filter list as concise as possible.

2. AD PLACEMENTS

Location, Location, Location

Make sure you place the ads where your users will see them. For example, most visitors will not scroll below the fold line and this is why ads “above the fold” are considered premium placements and are so popular among advertisers and users. In the same way, people often look for menu bars on the left side of a page so ads in that location are “hot.”

Place the ads in a location which will complement users’ behavior. Based on previous testing, integrating ad units into the page content, navigation, or article text provides a better user experience, as it gives your users relevant ads in addition to the content they normally see. For example placing a rectangle in the middle of a long article not only helps your visitors read those ads, but it also gives them a visual break. At the same time users are often interested in the supplemental ad content above, below, or between your articles, which will garner additional activity on your ads.

- Pages with lots of text, requiring users to scroll down the page.

The Winner Takes It All

To maximize your revenue you can use up to 3 ad units on any page. However make sure that the ad unit with the highest CTR is the first ad unit in the HTML code of your page. It will show the top, most expensive ads that win the ad auction. For example, if you use DIV tags, our system may recognize an ad unit which users see at the bottom of the page as the first ad unit. To determine which of your ad units has the highest CTR, and then placing that ad unit first in the HTML code. To determine which ad unit has the highest CTR, we recommend using custom channels. The Search For The Golden Egg

Do you make the most out of the search functionality on your site? With AdSense for Search you’ll provide your users with additional useful information and you’ll monetize the Google search results pages with our relevant ads.
The search results pages can be customized to fit the overall look and feel of your website, and you’ll be paid for every valid click on the ads that appear on results pages.
- Place your search boxes in visible, easy-to-find locations, such as under the header or in your left navigation. Also, keep the placement of your search boxes consistent on all your pages, so users will know where to look if they need help finding something.
- Add two search boxes to content-rich, long pages – one at the top and one at the bottom of the page.
- Host your search results on your own site. This will keep users on your page and if they don’t find what they’re looking for in the search results or ads, they’ll still be able to to navigate to other sections of your site using your site’s template. - Add a search box to your search results pages so users can perform additional searches from your site.

Don’t underestimate the link units. You can add up to 3 link units per page to provide additional targeted advertising for your users. - Don’t be afraid to experiment. Even small changes can have a big impact.
